Light values based on real-world measurements, like the numbers on bulb packaging or a photographic light meter. For lights to behave correctly, keep scene scale at 1 unit = 1 metre.

Units

cdCandelaLuminous intensity

The SI base unit. A common wax candle ≈ 1 cd.

lmLumenLuminous flux

Total visible light emitted in all directions. Scene brightness stays the same when the source gets bigger, but its highlights get dimmer.

1 cd × 1 sr = 1 lm
lxLuxIlluminance

Light arriving on a surface: lumens per square metre.

1 lm ÷ 1 m² = 1 lx
ntNitsLuminance

Surface brightness of the source. A bigger source adds more total light, while highlight intensity stays the same.

1 cd ÷ 1 m² = 1 nit
EVExposure valueCamera exposure

Any shutter speed + f-number pair giving the same exposure shares one EV. EV100 = EV at ISO 100.
